Case Studies

Since 2021, our research has centered on case studies with twelve Catholic, Orthodox, mainline, and conservative Protestant congregations across Canada. Thanks to generous funding by SSHRC and CCCU, we are trying to answer these four questions:

01

What does flourishing mean in this congregational context, and what contributes to such flourishing?

What does flourishing mean in this congregational context, and what contributes to such flourishing?

02

What are the mechanisms, pathways, and processes that contribute to congregational flourishing ? Which variables appear to interact with one another toward flourishing?

03

What role does a congregation’s history and lifecycle – its past periods of flourishing and/or not flourishing – play in its flourishing today?

04

How does congregational flourishing intersect with individuals, neighbourhoods, and organizations?

Case Study Results

Strain and Resilience: Volunteering in a Catholic Parish

Flourishing is not static. Some areas flourish today and flounder tomorrow, while areas once floundering may now flourish. The same area of congregational life may simultaneously undergo strain and resiliency. By Dr. Joel Thiessen

Changing the Culture: Moving a Church from “Maintenance to Mission”

Successfully changing the culture of a church often goes better when a great opportunity presents itself, which is what happened at the church we studied. By Dr. Sam Reimer
